Wildlife: The Colorado Blue Spruce provides food and shelter for siskins, nuthatches, and crossbills. Deer will often eat the foliage.

Notes: Long slender leaves change from bright green to orange-red in the autumn. Flowers are dense yellow-green and fragrant. Fruit forms in dense, bright red, compact clusters, and persists thoughout winter. Sumac will spread from root suckers. Some beekeepers use dried sumac bobs as a source of fuel for their smokers. All parts of the staghorn sumac, except the roots, can be used as a natural dye. Branches have a hairy texture. Wildlife: Fruit is eaten by turkey, ruffed grouse, bobwhite, pheasant, and many others.

Acer palmatum 'Aka kawa hime' is a Japanese maple coral bark selection that was found and named by the famous nurserymen, Del Loucks. "Aka" means deep red, while "kawa" refers to the bark and "hime" refers to this maples dwarf stature. Aka kawa hime leafs out in the early spring with bright chartreuse green leaves over top of a deep red coral bark. Mid-summer the leaves turn to a kelley green. Fall colors are bright golden yellows. This Japanese maple is one of the most dwarf selections of the coral bark varieties. As the leaves unfold in the spring the edges are tinted with red to rusty red. The early summer foliage becomes a bright light green. The fall colors are outstanding with brilliant shades of red with an occasional touch of yellow and orange. The leaves keep their color into late fall thus extending Kamagata's beauty. This cultivar is one of the few selected and named by Vertrees himself, who was very careful to avoid naming any but the most unique Japanese Maples.
