Sunflowers were named for their habit of turning their faces to the sun. At the beginning of their development they exhibit heliotropism, or following the sun in its course from east to west, though the mature blossoms usually end up facing straight east. These versatile plants have an ancient history, beginning with Native American tribes across North America as early as 2000 BC. The seeds were used for their oil, ground up for meal, or simply eaten as a snack; the plant also provided dye and medicinal ointment. In 18th century Europe, sunflowers were widely used both in gardens and for making cooking oil; the production of this heart-healthy oil eventually became a major industry both in Europe and America. These are said to be the happiest of flowers, and in the language of flowers they symbolize loyalty and constancy.
The Samurai Orchid (Neofinetia falcata) is one of the most desirable orchids in the world. In ancient Japan, only Samurai were permitted to grow this beautiful plant, and some prized specimens have been grown in private collections for centuries. Even today, some specimens can fetch $100,000 (yes, thatÃs dollars, not yen)! ItÃs easy to see why collectors covet this formerly forbidden orchid: the elegant appearance of its leaves, the graceful curves of its flowers and their attractive fragrance, the sheen of its meandering roots, and its compact size create an alluring effect that brings elegance and style to wherever it is grown. Despite its delicate appearance, this is an easy orchid to grow, and easy to bloom. Flowers typically emerge in mid-summer, but some plants will bloom earlier or later. A single growth will continue to produce a new flower spike or two in each year (unlike some orchid types that produce only one flower spike per growth). New shoots (plantlets) grow from the base of the plant, and readily mature into lovely new fans. A well-grown plant with multiple growths will produce a lovely array of fragrant flowers. The long, aerial roots of Neofinetia add to their attractive appearance (unlike thin, utilitarian roots of Oncidium or Dendrobium orchids). These roots are remarkably resilient, and multiple new growing tips can sprout even from old roots that appear dead! Sphagnum moss is the most popular potting media, but it will grow very well in orchid bark and looks beautiful mounted on a slab of cork. Water two or three times a week during the growing season, and less during winter. NOTE: Plant will be shipped bare root (with moist material around the roots) as different growers prefer to use their own growing media.
